The Friends of Sagamore Hill will commence the 4th Annual Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series on Thursday, March 27th in Oyster Bay, N.Y. This program is free to the public and offers the opportunity to both hear and speak with illustrious experts on subjects and people related to our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt and Oyster Bay history. 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of TR’s birthday and this series is the first in a number of sesquicentennial observances to be held this year.
Doors open at 7pm and the programs begin at 7:30; at a new location, the Matinecock Masonic Lodge located at 14 West Main Street, in Oyster Bay Hamlet. Following each lecture and brief discussion, light refreshments will be served and the public can meet with the speakers in an informal setting.
On Thursday, March 27th, Dr. Natalie A. Naylor, Author, Researcher, University Professor & Trustee of the Nassau County Historical Society will present “Managing a Country Estate; TR as Country Squire and Edith Roosevelt as CEO; an intimate look at life at Sagamore Hill and it’s operation.
On Thursday, April 24th, Ms. Amy Verone, Chief of Cultural Resources , Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, will recount “The Fourth Estate Visits Sagamore Hill, Putting Theodore Roosevelt in his Place” and the invaluable documentation left for posterity by the “Gentlemen of The Press”.
On Thursday, May 15th, Dr. John G. Staudt, University Professor, Author and former Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association will present “We Are All Going Up or Down Together”, discussing Theodore Roosevelt’s stance on Race in America.
The Friends of Sagamore Hill, is a non-profit educational and service organization that supports the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, NY; and is also a Chapter of the Theodore Roosevelt Association. This lecture series is given annually in memory of the late Dr. John Gable, past Executive Director of The TRA who was renowned as the world’s foremost authority on Theodore Roosevelt. Dr. Gable’s work brought a better understanding of TR to the world; appreciation to Sagamore Hill NHS; and recognition to Oyster Bay through his many efforts, including help with the installation of the magnificent equestrian monument of TR in Oyster Bay Hamlet in 2006.
