Mo Rocca visits Friends of Sagamore Hill: Are there any friends out there?
On October 7, 2005, political satirist Mo Rocca came and entertained a rather intimate group of people at a book-signing fundraiser at Christ Church Parish Hall in Oyster Bay. Mo has been regularly appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, entertaining the audience with anecdotes about his road trips. Having had little sleep the night before, Mo was in rare form last October 7th, virtually doubling the audience over with laughter. The young people in the audience vied with each other to ask their myriad questions about Presidential pets, a subject on which Mo spoke at length, peppering his information with heretofore unknown factoids. He then signed numerous copies of his book, “All the Presidents’ Pets.”
Of concern was the size of the audience, which could be counted by only one person using his own fingers and toes. The event had been well-publicized by the local papers, on the Hofstra radio programming, and with local flyers. Even this website and the Theodore Roosevelt Association listserve proclaimed Mo’s rare and wonderful visit! Although a modest profit was made to invest in Sagamore Hill’s upkeep, the question was asked by Mo himself, “Are there any friends of Sagamore Hill out there???” Should you, yes, you, have any interest in the upkeep and beautification of Theodore Roosevelt’s one and only home, which doubled as the Summer White House for 7 summers, please try to attend one of this spring’s Dr. John Gable Lecture Series, where brochures describing The Friends of Sagamore Hill will be available. If you are unable to attend, you may call the contacts listed on the flyer and ask for membership brochures.
